Uwagi
- Its high oil content gives it a constipation-relieving effect.
- Overdose can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting and headache, and may progress to dyspnea, dilated pupils, arrhythmia and coma. Cooking the kernel, removing its coat, and mixing it with sugar reduce its toxicity; the apricot's bark or root cortex serve as antidotes.
- It is included in expectorant formulas, particularly for Lung Cold.
- It inhibits cancer cell growth.
- In powdered form, it can fully inhibit the growth of strongly carcinogenic fungi.
- It can be used for intestinal cancer.
- It works well for externally contracted cough.
- Because it directs Qi downward, it is effective at stopping cough and wheezing.
- Some sources note that it also relieves muscle tension.
- It clears pathogenic factors from the muscles and skin, expels Wind, sends Qi downward, eliminates Dryness and relieves Qi Stagnation.
- Its toxicity is put to use in treating sores and killing parasites.
- Xing Ren frees the Lung collaterals — soft in nature, it presses inward and downward — while Rx. Ephedrae Ma Huang opens the pores and interstices, being hard in nature and expanding outward; combined, the pair thoroughly eradicates the pathogen.
- Xing Ren and Sm. Persicae Tao Ren both help constipation from Qi or Blood Stagnation; Xing Ren relieves asthma by circulating Qi, while Tao Ren relieves mania by invigorating the Blood.
- Xing Ren is combined with Per. Citri Reticulate Chen Pi for Deficient patients unable to tolerate strong purgatives.
- Sm. Armeniacae Amrum Ku Xing Ren (bitter or northern Apricot Kernel) is the most commonly used type; its outer coating is toxic and must be removed.
- Sm. Armeniacae Dulce Tian Xing Ren (sweet or southern Apricot Kernel) is used for dry or Deficiency-type coughs; less toxic and more moistening, it treats cough and wheezing with milder, more gradual action than Ku Xing Ren, and these kernels also serve as food.
- Dry-fried Apricot Kernel Chao Xing Ren suits patients with weak Spleen and Stomach who tend toward loose stools, while still relieving cough and wheezing.
- Defatted Apricot Kernel Xing Ren Shuang lacks Intestine-moistening action but still transforms Phlegm and stops cough, and may also invigorate the Blood and open the collaterals.
