Uwagi

  • Since abundant Qi gives rise to Blood and Fluids, this herb indirectly supports a normal supply of Blood and Fluids.
  • Its actions resemble those of Rx. Ginseng Ren Shen, though milder.
  • Ginseng finds greater use in emergency situations.
  • Dang Shen suits Spleen Qi Deficiency accompanied by poor digestion.
  • It is reputed to improve and refresh the complexion.
  • Dang Shen and Rx. Ginseng Ren Shen share similar properties and functions, but Ren Shen has a much wider range of action and is needed when a disorder is severe or calls for immediate relief, as in collapse patterns or heavy bleeding. Dang Shen tonifies Qi and, indirectly, Blood and Fluids, but it neither tonifies Yuan Qi nor generates Fluids directly; its action is confined to the Spleen and Lungs and is weaker than Ren Shen's. It is nonetheless adequate for everyday clinical needs, making it a good, and often inexpensive, substitute for Ren Shen when a Deficiency pattern is not severe.
  • Dry-frying produces Codonopsis Chao Dang Shen, which is warming and better suited to tonifying the Spleen and Stomach. Frying with bran increases its tonifying power; frying with white rice strengthens the Spleen, harmonizes the Stomach, and lessens Food Stagnation along with the cloying tendency of tonics; frying with yellow earth boosts Spleen Qi, checks diarrhea and reduces nausea; and frying with Halloysitum Rubrum Chi Shi Zhi further strengthens its antidiarrheal effect, making it suitable for severe Spleen Deficiency with persistent diarrhea.
  • Honey-prepared Codonopsis, Zhi Dang Shen, gains the ability to tonify Middle Jiao Qi while moistening Spleen Yin, treating Spleen Qi and Yin Deficiency or combined Qi and Blood Deficiency.
