Uwagi

  • Arnebia's root is soft in texture and is termed the “soft purple herb.”
  • Lithospermi's root is firmer and is called the “hard purple herb.”
  • The majority of sources identify Lithospermi as the correct botanical source of Zi Cao.
  • It has been shown to suppress the growth of cancer cells.
  • It is used for skin cancer and breast tumors.
  • As a preventive for measles it has shown 91% effectiveness.
  • It treats most skin conditions along with cuts and burns.
  • It is said to resolve malignant sores, eruptions, smallpox, and tinea.
  • It is reported to resolve jaundice accompanied by morning fever, though it is not effective when red or black flecks are present on the body.
  • When red or black flecks appear on the body, the herb can instead be used to fumigate the arches of the feet, the palms, and the points DU-20 and LI-8.
  • For smallpox: decoct 3g Zi Cao with 1.5g Per. Citri Reticulatae Chen Pi and 4g Bul. Allii Macrostemi Xie Bai.
  • Related Western herbs include borage, used for fevers, and comfrey, regarded as a “cure-all” including for cancer.
  • Promotes urination.
  • Both Zi Cao and Fr. Arctii Niu Bang Zi resolve toxicity, vent rashes, moisten the bowels, and unblock the Intestines, but their strengths diverge: Zi Cao excels at clearing and regulating Blood Heat, is less able to eliminate Damp-Heat, and treats rashes that fail to express fully due to Blood Heat toxin; Niu Bang Zi, by contrast, mobilizes the Qi level, releases the Exterior, disperses Wind-Heat, benefits the throat, breaks up clumps, drains the Interior, sends Qi downward, and resolves Heat toxin, treating rashes caused by Wind-Heat trapped at the Exterior.
