Uwagi

  • This herb irritates the gastric mucosa and is toxic to the Liver and Kidneys, so patients must be monitored closely.
  • It is taken on an empty stomach during acute dysentery attacks, with Spleen tonics given during periods of remission.
  • It can be used topically for warts.
  • For topical use, it is crushed and mixed with grain-based liquor into a paste.
  • Because it is very bitter and unsuitable for decocting, it is usually taken as a capsule or tablet.
  • Overdose presents with nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargy, dizziness and upper gastrointestinal bleeding; severe cases may show dyspnea, anuria, fever, convulsions, numbness or paralysis of the extremities, Kidney and Liver damage, and loss of consciousness. Adverse reactions typically appear within twenty to sixty minutes, and in adults overdose may follow ingestion of fifty seeds.
  • Being extremely bitter and cold, it is often paired with Arillus Longan Long Yan Rou — which tonifies the Heart, calms the Shen, nourishes the Blood and protects the Spleen — so that pathogens are eliminated while the Spleen is supported; for hemorrhoids, Fr. Bruceae Ya Dan Zi can be wrapped in Long Yan Rou.
  • Ya Dan Zi and Rx. Pulsatillae Bai Tou Weng both resolve toxicity and cool the Blood, and both are used for Damp-Heat or Toxic-Heat dysentery. Ya Dan Zi is better at resolving toxicity, expelling Dampness and killing parasites, whereas Bai Tou Weng is preferred for Damp-Heat dysentery owing to its strong Heat-clearing, Blood-cooling and Dampness-expelling properties. Yan Dan Zi works best for periodic dysentery and also treats malaria.
  • Defatted Brucea Fruit Ya Dan Zi Shuang is far less toxic and can be taken without side effects, though its medicinal potency is correspondingly reduced; it is used mainly for elderly, weak or pediatric patients and has almost no topical effect. This form is valued throughout Asia for treating stubborn intestinal parasites.
