Uwagi
- Some sources place this herb in the “Blood Invigorating” category.
- Its effect is weaker than that of Rx. Notoginseng San Qi.
- It is used mainly for hematemesis or hemoptysis caused by Blood Stasis, and for postpartum bleeding.
- It stops bleeding from metal wounds and expels a dead fetus or retained afterbirth, though it severely damages Yin and Blood.
- Hua Rui Shi, Rx. Notoginseng San Qi, Crinis Carbonisatus Xue Yu Tan, Pollen Typhae Pu Huang, and Rx. Rubiae Qian Cao share the actions of stopping bleeding and removing Stasis, and are frequently combined for Stasis-related bleeding of every kind, or whenever bleeding must be stopped without leaving residual Stasis behind. Hua Rui Shi stops bleeding and removes Stasis by gathering and transforming the Blood. San Qi is among the strongest of the group, also relieving pain and reducing swelling, and excels in treating trauma. Xue Yu Tan generates new flesh and helps wounds and ulcers close over. Pu Huang promotes urination. Qian Cao cools the Blood and regulates menstruation, used when Heat in the Blood causes bleeding and Stasis by drying out the Blood.
- Calcined Ophicalcitum Duan Hua Rui Shi powders more readily, is less sour and astringent, and is less likely to upset digestion; it is the preferred form for internal use, though it can also be applied topically.
- Vinegar-calcined Ophicalcitum Cu Duan Hua Rui Shi has a stronger astringent action for stopping bleeding.
- Sulfur-calcined Liu Huang Duan Hua Rui Shi is used mainly, applied topically, for sores and for bleeding caused by trauma.
